Fieldwork
Bridging Theory and Practice in Geography
Fieldwork is the practical side of Geography. It gives learners a chance to investigate a real place, collect evidence, and then apply classroom concepts to something they can actually observe.
Overview
In Grade 10 CAPS, fieldwork is not just an add-on. It helps learners practise the geographical enquiry process from choosing a topic to collecting data, analysing findings, and presenting a report.
The Fieldwork Process
The fieldwork process follows a structured investigative approach known as the Geographical Enquiry method:
Formulating a Topic
Identify a specific, measurable geographical problem to investigate. For example, "The impact of traffic on school access" allows focus on a tangible issue.
Data Collection (Primary)
Gather original information directly from the environment using various techniques.
Data Processing & Analysis
Organize data into logical formats such as tables, bar graphs, or line graphs to identify trends and patterns.
Reporting Findings
Write a report presenting findings with deductions, predictions, or recommendations based on evidence gathered.
Data Collection Methods
Observation
Identify physical and human features in the study area
Measurement
Use thermometers, measuring tapes for quantitative data
Interviews & Surveys
Engage with locals to gather qualitative data
Recording
Field notes, photographs, sketches of observations
Common Fieldwork Topics
Fieldwork is integrated into the four main theoretical terms of the Grade 10 Geography curriculum:
Weather Station
Set up a small weather station to record daily temperature, rainfall, and wind speed over a specified period. Understand atmospheric conditions and variations.
Rock Types & Landforms
Visit a local site to identify different rock types, slope elements, or evidence of weathering and mass movement. Connect geological concepts with real examples.
Local Survey
Conduct a local survey to study migration patterns or land-use changes in your neighborhood. Understand population dynamics and environmental impact.
Water Quality Study
Investigate a nearby river or dam to analyze water quality, pollution levels, or management strategies. Emphasize sustainable water resource management.
Assessment and Skills
Paper 2 Integration
While fieldwork is practical, skills developed, such as interpreting data or reading maps, are heavily tested in Paper 2: Geographical Skills and Techniques. This ensures learners can apply fieldwork experiences to theoretical assessments.
SBA Projects
Many schools incorporate a fieldwork-based task as a Formal Assessment Task (FAT) or project for the year. This evaluates understanding of geographical concepts and ability to conduct research and present findings effectively.
